PAPER #1

Narrative Essay Link

Self Assessment:

The essay written above was about describing my own personal experience in the nature. In the essay, I described my experience in the Central Park. The essay contains details from my trip to the park and how I was personally able to connect myself with the nature and how exciting I felt. The purpose of my essay was creating a solution from what I experienced. In this case, the problem I was working with was how city life disrupts the mother nature and causes negative climate change. To find a solution for the said issue, I picked New York City which I believe is one of those cities that are the epicenter of this problem. Then I remembered the time I visited Central Park and the positive vibes from it and turned my experience to the topic I was trying to discuss. The solution that I came up with is building more parks. I tried to organize the ideas and plots in the most coherent way possible. I started my essay with a introduction to the problems of city life and how it’s causing danger Then, I opted to talk a little bit about New York City to demonstrate how NYC is just a typical problem-raising city which then slowly transitioned into my anecdote. The anecdote was about me travelling to the park, being there and observe the nature. My next transition in the essay was from my story to the conclusion where I talked about how exactly the problem I discussed might have a solution if we build more parks in every single city around the world and how they can save city’s’ ecosystems. Throughout my essay, I used different types of dictions such as informal diction, concrete diction and abstract diction. I used informal diction trying to be conversational and simplistic to appeal to my audience which consists of policymakers who will be the one to decide whether to make a park or not and people living in city who I ask to co-operate to give my idea a shape. I mixed it with concrete and abstract dictions which together help building my anecdote as well as my concluding message. One important thing I focused on besides my choice of word was incorporating a proper mindset. I stood very clear on what I tried to accomplish throughout my essay and used my own story as the emotional connection that I made in order to progress my central idea. I also showed a very optimistic attitude along with hopefulness which very much describes the positive intention that prompted me to write an essay about finding a way to save the nature, therefore, save our environment. I had a very fixed mindset going forward with my writing and I was very serious about the rhetorical appeal used in the essay. I put together my credibility, my emotion and my logic all together to make it meaningful. Overall, to conclude, I used my own knowledge of many rhetorical aspect that used in a good writing combined with styles and mindset to establish my essay as convincing to the readers.

PAPER #2

Exploratory Essay Link

Self Assessment:

Clicking the link above will take us to an exploratory essay. In this essay, my task was to research on my subtopic that I have been assigned regarding climate change in our FIQWS Scientific World class. I was asked to introduce and explore my subtopic by researching sources, evaluate sources and gather claims from and write about their findings in details in order to summarize and conclude my thoughts based on their theories. My subtopic for research was how climate affects water scarcity and with the help of my own research I found three primary ways climate affects water scarcity. Three causes are deforestation, sea level rise and water pollution. From my own research I found that all these three causes are alarming and they need to be controlled but I have seen that scientists are conflicted over to classify the most and the least concerning cause so that they can take action according to. I built ethos to describe my awareness o the problem that I was trying to address. So, throughout the essay, I explored many different articles and what they said about these three major problems. I decided to demonstrate an argument from a particular research site on how they think deforestation could be the most chaotic issue amongst the three. I also selected an argument from experts who think sea level rise could destroy our existence and I did the same in favor of water pollution. My whole body of the essay was just stating different scientists’ and researchers’ views on these three issues that I gather from trusted sites. I used allusion to reference to the finding from various sources. My final task was to jump to a conclusion where I evaluated different claims regarding all three primary causes of water scarcity due to climate change in order to give my own thoughts on what I think could be the most dangerous issue and I ranked sea level rise is the fastest growing threat to result in water shortage followed deforestation which is then followed by water pollution. I have come to this conclusion with the usage of logos which helped me to give reasons to back up my thoughts. Overall I created a sort of rhetorical situation with my essay as my whole discourse was based on existing issues and I ended my argument by asking the audience to act upon. In this case, my audience were all the climate scientists and researchers who can probably agree or disagree with my thoughts on their findings and take necessary action to combat water scarcity due to climate change. My final responsibility was to add bibliography for all the credible sources that I used to help shape my essay. I used APA citation for this since it’s a scientific research and with that I completed my task of writing an exploratory essay on my research subtopic which was overall approximately six pages long including the citation page.

PAPER #3

Final Research Paper Link

Self Assessment:

The added link above is where the final formal analytical research paper is. This was our final paper for this class which was a research report on our assigned subtopics. for this paper, I worked with my fellow students in a group of five to choose our topic and subtopics. Our chosen topic was the same for everyone but everyone had different subtopics which has been reviewed and approved by our professor. This paper required students to conduct a thorough research on the selected individual subtopic and make a claim answering the question asked by the subtopic, which would be then supported by credible sources throughout the report. So, to start, I chose and got approval of my subtopic which was “how climate affects water scarcity”. My next step was to create a mind map which would help me coming up with a thesis statement that would answer my subtopic question. Once I decided how to answer the prompt, I shifted my focused on gathering credible sources that will support my argument/reasoning. Once I got all my sources ready, I looked at the rubric and required styles of formatting. Since it was a scientific research paper, I had to follow the APA styles of writing by maintaining proper margin, font, spacing, alignment and colors. I used some of the links posted by the professor to get an idea of proper APA styles. After successfully understanding the process of APA styles, I finally began writing my research paper. For my cover page I had my subtopic as the title aligned in center along with my name, course name, professor’s name, date and college name. The next page was table of contents where I listed all of my research contents with the page numbers included. Next page was the list of tables and figures where I listed any tables and figure I used for my research paper. The next page (page no.4) is where I started writing my materials for my research. The research part included introduction which had his own different parts highlighted, then the parts where I made argument for my thesis statement. At page 9, I concluded my research and at page 11 and 12, listed my bibliography with every source cited in APA. As for what was in my material itself, I started introducing about climate change and water scarcity in my introduction and I also built my thesis and I claimed that deforestation, sea level rise and water pollution are the three primary ways climate affects water scarcity. First I talked about deforestation, then sea level rise and then water pollution. I used APA in text citation to reference my sources within the text. This process of referencing sources is also a rhetorical tool known as Allusion. So, this was how I structured my research paper with my upmost effort of checking every required boxes.
